Web Analytics

It is not enough to upload a website and let it remain there on its own.  Web Analytics is all about analyzing the online behavior of visitors to a site in order to understand the effectiveness of the website and the improvements it may need.

So now you have an effective website.  People come to your site, view, maybe buy and then leave.  But wouldn’t it be of so much more help if you could keep track of the online behavior of these visitors?

That is exactly what web analytics is all about.  Web analytics is the process by which you collect and study data from your visitors in relation to your website.

Common types of data that is collected for web analytics are: how the visitor found the site, the time and date of the visit, what they looked at when they visited and what they might have bought or downloaded.  Answers to these types of questions will help you keep track of your visitors and how well your website is doing.

Of course, it is not enough to merely collect the information from your website.  Numbers by themselves might be quite pointless.  These data have to be analyzed for them to tell a story.  There are trained ‘web analytics managers’ or ‘web data analysts’ that can intelligently decipher the meanings that lie behind the data that is collected.

The rationale behind collecting information for web analytics can be divided into three broad terms:  marketing, merchandising and design.  Information that is collected is dissected and analyzed through these three perspective to see how effective the website actually is.  Web analytics also allow website owners to investigate the path that visitors take when they visit the site and identify why some paths work while others fail.

The first step in web analytics is to collect data, via logs, email or any other method that might be suitable for you.  Once you have your data in front of you, you need to translate it into a form that can be worked with.  When you analyze the data, you should look for trends that will give you insights into the behavior of your visitors.  These insights should lead you to an action plan to improve your site.  It is just as important that, once you have made improvements to your site, you collect more data to see if your visitors appreciate these developments.
