Often, the terms ‘Intranet’ and ‘Extranet’ are confused and remain ambiguous. To define these terms simply, Intranet is a range of content that is shared by a specific group, but this content is used only within a particular organization. On the other hand, the content on the Extranet can be viewed and used by members of a specific group and its access is available beyond the boundaries of the organization. In other words, the basic difference between Intranet and Extranet is the degree of access to the content that is allowed to members.
A corporate Intranet can makes it easier for members of the organization to communicate, which can translate into increased sales efforts and cooperation with other departments. An Intranet system can include message boards, calendars with organization events and methods to share documents and other information. On the other hand, Extranets are usually business-to-business methods of communication. The nature of an Extranet is such that it allows certain amount of external participation.
However, as users of these technologies, we should also be aware that the definition of both Intranet and Extranet are changing, and oftentimes the two terms are used loosely or they overlap. That is to say, in many instances, information that only members of an organization can access is termed Intranet even if it is available on the freely accessible World Wide Web.
A lot of planning goes into establishing an Intranet and an Extranet. Development for either one of them involves cooperation between the developers of the Intranet or Extranet, the key members of the organization, and of course, the people who are actually going to use the system. Once the system is set up effectively your organization will benefit from the open communication and dissemination of information between your colleagues, clients and other stakeholders of your firm.
