GUI Analysis

Operating Systems have not always been so pleasing to the eye.  Before the Graphic User Interface (GUI), computer screens were filled with texts and required users to remember many commands.  With GUI came features like windows, pull down menus and other graphic tools.

GUI, or Graphic User Interface, relies on graphics instead of text as a user interface.  To current computer users this might seem like an obvious fact.  However, it was not always like this.  The first interactive user interfaces used only texts and looked entirely different from the way they do these days.

It is the MAC and the Windows Operating Systems that familiarized us with GUI.  The old user interfaces were mostly text and keyboard-based and it often required users to remember commands.  Before the introduction of GUI, user interfaces looked very much like the DOS operating system. One step head of the text-based user interface was the non-graphical menu-based interface.   In this type of interface, you could use the mouse for interaction with the computer instead of just with the keyboard commands.

The period after the non-graphical menu based interface was when we were introduced to graphic user interface.  The time when GUI was developed was when features like the desktop, windows, icons, pull-down menus, and the other things that we are now very familiar with came about.

GUI did not stop there.  The recent popularity of multimedia has seen an increase in the usage of sound, motion video, voice and virtual reality in interfaces.  “Look-and-Feel” is the phrase that is often used to refer to the GUI along with its input devices.
