Latent Semantic Indexing

Internet marketers are always looking for new ways in which to increase their visibility online. Because the Internet is, above all, a visual medium if your website does not catch a surfer’s eyes then its purpose is defeated. It is only after a surfer finds your website and enters it that any profits can be made via Internet marketing.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, includes all the activities that go into increasing the ranking of one’s website on a search engine results page. A huge part of SEO is to have keywords as part of the content on your webpage so that search engines can find these keywords when search words are entered into a search engine. It is with the help of these keywords that a search engine decides if a website is relevant enough to be on the search results page or not. What happens with keywords in relation to relevance is that a website might actually be relevant to a search but might not have the appropriate keywords inserted in the right way, this means that that website will not be recognized by the search engine as a relevant search.

That is where latent semantic indexing comes in. Unlike relevance based on keyword which tags websites as relevant or not relevant, latent semantic indexing gives more space for search engines to decide if a website is relevant or not. That is to say, there is more grey area with latent semantic indexing unlike SEO with keywords, which is black and white. Essentially, latent semantic indexing searches the whole webpage as a whole and does not tag a webpage as irrelevant if keywords are not found. Instead latent semantic indexing looks for words that are related to keywords in some way or are semantically close. This means that words that are related in meaning to the keywords will also be considered when relevance is being considered. This works out better for searchers because latent semantic indexing ensures that the relevant sites that you get are not limited to the keywords that you enter into the search engine.

The advantage of latent semantic indexing that it processes a search in a way that is similar to the way a human mind works. With latent semantic indexing the focus is taken away from keywords so searchers can expect to get a lot more search results that are related to what they are looking for. But there is also a flip side to that. If a searcher is working with only one keyword then there might not be as many search results that are generated. More search results can be expected when a few search keywords are used and variations of these keywords can also be entered.

Another advantage of latent semantic indexing is that websites that stuff their website content with keywords will not necessarily show up as a relevant match. Sometimes websites overly use predictable keywords on their websites in hope that search engines will be able to spot them quickly. However, doing this means that the content of the site might not exactly be of high quality but would show up with high ranking on a search engine results page anyhow. This means that latent semantic indexing would give you access to websites with higher quality content

This is an advantage from the website copywriters’ point of view also. Often content on a website is stuffed with keywords because web developers want to get high ranking on a search engine as easily as possibly. With latent semantic indexing they know that they do not have to rely solely on keywords and can use a whole range of related ideas to make their content creative and pleasant to read.

The change that latent semantic indexing brings to the Internet is a positive one. The Internet is becoming an increasingly competitive place and more often than not, websites cannot afford to not have a ranking on a search engine. Search engine optimization is getting a lot of attention from Internet marketers because that is where their success online lies. It does not help to have a great website with creative content if web surfers are not actually able to find it on the Internet. Latent semantic indexing works on the basis of mathematical algorithms in an intelligent way that allows search engines to seek out relevant information on the Internet. Latent semantic indexing ensures that websites can be found based on their keywords but, at the same time, website content developers do not have to compromise on the quality of their content.
