Link Exchange – Is it worth the effort?
The world of the internet is inter-connected and inter-dependent. The use of the word web connotes this characteristic of the internet. And it is through links that the inter-dependence and connectivity of websites manifests. So at one level, the answer to the question, whether link exchanges are worth the effort, would be yes they are. But let us first have a better understanding of concept of link exchanges.
Link exchange is the process of exchanging links with other websites. The practice of link exchange is no novelty, but its importance has grown over the years as search engines (like Google) start to give higher rankings to websites that have good quality links. It is important to note that rankings are not for websites with more links, but for websites that have good quality links. And it is this aspect that makes a seemingly simple exercise very difficult.
A simple way to get a link exchange is to contact webmasters through email, and ask them for a link exchange. Yet another straightforward way of getting into a link exchange program is to request for one though dedicated link exchange forums on webmaster discussion boards.
Another effective way is to have one-way links to your site. One way links truly vouch for the credibility and relevance of the content on one’s page. A one-way link would mean that your website has been linked, not as a return favor, as often happens in link exchange, but because of the worthiness of the content on it. After all, the basic assumption is that the link between two websites would be made because of similarity in the content. And part of the reason why a link would be considered of good quality by a search engine would be if it has any relevance (in terms of content) to your website. Much like one-way linking, the system of three-way links also holds some credibility in the eyes of search engines.
There has been a huge rise in unethical practices in the field of link exchange. Search engines penalize websites that indulge in such practices, such as websites that participate in link farms. Automated linking is yet another prevalent practice, wherein once you become a member you are automatically linked to many web pages who in turn get a back link from you.
But let us return to the question which we once answered in the affirmative. The reason link exchange is worth the effort is that good quality link shows that the content on the website is considered noteworthy by other webmasters also. But there is a flip side to the argument.
A lot of hard work goes into the same. And the process of obtaining relevant links is filled with many traps and pitfalls. Traps set by sites that offer services which would guarantee you numerous links. If you fall into the trap, you will end up being penalized by a search engine. Search engines also have mechanisms by which they identify and penalize sites that have unnatural linking patterns.
So the answer is yes, and no. Personally speaking, the answer can be a yes if you are clear about approach towards link exchange. Webmasters who fall in the aforesaid trap are those who are looking for shortcuts, and forget the true purpose of websites and links. Always keep the user in mind. Write high quality content, design a superior quality website and make sure it is user-friendly. To drive people to your site you can engage in other activities such as participating in discussion forums. In these forums, people will click on your link, and are sure to link to your website if they find the content relevant to the topic—many would probably even have one-way links.
On the other hand, reciprocal links on your site must complement its content. If you link to a site based on thematic considerations, you are sure to have a reciprocal link for the same reason. From the perspective of the search engine, the natural and relevant links would seem an extension of your content. There are many who believe that reciprocal links are no longer as effective as they used to be. The reason is the proliferation of spammers on the net. And the fact is link exchange is not a stand alone method anymore, and needs to be used in conjunction with other appropriate techniques.
Any complex process that we undertake would truly be worth the while if it becomes worth the while for the end user. The same holds true for link exchange. The key to a successful link exchange program is patience. Relevant and natural links are bound to attract the attention of both users and search engines, and at the end of the day, all yours efforts will pay off.
